In activity since 2015, AfroGrafiteiras was born from data and research that showed that Rates of violence and femicide decreased for white women, while increasing for black women. With the Ford Foundation as its sponsor, AfroGrafiteiras is a training programme in urban art, focused on the expression and promotion of black women as protagonists. The project offers tools for racialized women to express crucial issues in their lives and thoughts for society in their art, as a counterpoint to the way they have been represented by traditional media.

The programme has a hybrid format with theoretical and practical meetings, and conversations about art and human rights. Classes are held virtually through videos posted on NAMI’s YouTube channel. Students receive kits with drawing and painting materials at home to develop their artistic practice, and they are mentored by a workshop coordinator on the Google Classroom platform, in addition to in-person meetings to make graffiti murals.
